The APGAR score is a rapid method for assessing the clinical status of the newborn infant at 1 and 5 minutes of age.
APGAR Score
Developed by Dr. Virginia Apgar in 1952, the APGAR score provides a convenient method for reporting the status of the newborn infant immediately after birth and the response to resuscitation if needed.
The score is comprised of 5 components: Appearance (Color), Pulse (Heart rate), Grimace (Reflex irritability), Activity (Muscle tone), and Respiration. Each is scored 0, 1, or 2.
