Understanding Anki Analytics & Optimization
True Retention
Unlike default stats, True Retention calculates how well you remember mature cards exactly when they are due. A healthy True Retention is typically between 80-90%.
Leech Cards
Leeches are cards that you repeatedly fail. Identifying and either rewriting, suspending, or deleting leech cards is crucial for efficient studying.
Ease Hell
Occurs when you repeatedly press 'Hard' or 'Again', dropping the ease factor. This results in the card showing up too frequently, overwhelming your daily reviews.
How to Fix Anki Ease Hell & Low Retention
Struggling with a mountain of daily reviews and low retention rates? You might be stuck in "Ease Hell". This happens when you press the 'Hard' button too often, causing Anki's algorithm to drastically reduce the interval between reviews.
1. Optimize Your Settings (FSRS)
If you haven't already, consider switching to the Free Spaced Repetition Scheduler (FSRS). It's a modern algorithm built into newer Anki versions that dynamically adjusts to your memory patterns, offering far better retention scheduling than the default SM-2 algorithm.
2. Manage Leech Cards
Use the Anki Analyzer above to identify your "Leeches". These are poorly formulated cards that you constantly forget.Action: Suspend them, rewrite them to follow the "minimum information principle", or delete them entirely if they are low-yield.
3. Trust the 'Good' Button
Stop pressing 'Hard'. If you know the card, press 'Good'. If you don't, press 'Again'. Overusing 'Hard' is the primary cause of Ease Hell.
